Customer-service bots just got a face that can keep up with the conversation.
Google has launched Gemini 3.8 Live with Live Avatar in Gemini Enterprise, pairing near real-time dialogue with low-latency streaming video. The avatar listens, speaks, and shows up on screen with precise lip-sync, natural expressions, and fluid turn-taking — more like a helpful person on a video call than a chat bubble.
Under the hood, Live Avatar can run tool calls in the background while the conversation continues, so an agent can check a reservation or pull account data without freezing mid-sentence. Google says lip-sync and expressions adapt across 97 languages without visual drift, and companies can start from preset characters or (with enterprise allowlisting) build a custom avatar from a high-quality reference image that keeps brand look and likeness.
On the trust side, every audio and video output carries SynthID watermarking so AI-generated presence stays detectable.
Why regular people should care
Help desks, hotel check-ins, and product walkthroughs are where most of us meet AI first. A face that stays present while it looks something up can make those moments feel less like waiting on hold and more like talking to someone who is actually listening. It is still software — but the bar for “does this feel usable?” just moved.
What’s next
Live Avatar is available now in Gemini Enterprise. Watch how brands customize avatars, how SynthID shows up in the wild, and whether visual agents become the default for support and training — not just demos.
