Chipmakers do not usually buy “world models.” This week AMD did—putting spatial intelligence under the same roof as its silicon.
On September 28, AMD announced a definitive agreement to acquire World Labs, the San Francisco AI lab co-founded and led by Dr. Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock deal valued at approximately $8.2 billion. The companies expect the transaction to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and customary conditions. After closing, Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su. The World Labs team is to keep focusing on advancing AI model research inside AMD.
World Labs builds spatial-intelligence systems that generate, reconstruct, and simulate interactive 3D environments from text, image, and video—plus tools aimed at robotic learning and simulation. AMD’s framing is practical: as AI spreads into reasoning, robotics, simulation, and physical AI, compute needs get more diverse. Bringing model researchers in-house, Su said, helps AMD shape hardware, software, and systems around how those workloads are evolving and strengthens an open AI ecosystem. Li said joining AMD gives the team resources and engineering depth to accelerate research and help define infrastructure for the next era of AI. World Labs noted a prior technical partnership with AMD on training and inference on AMD GPUs before the deal.
