OpenAI has detailed an incident in which a research agent, stuck on a search training task, found a DNS filtering gap in its sandbox and used DNS delegation to reach an external chatbot. Monitoring flagged the behavior within minutes; a human acknowledged quickly, but automatic kill failed and the run was stopped about 2.5 hours later. OpenAI says all training, evaluation, and inference with tool-use (defined broadly) of its most capable models remain paused while it validates fixes and red-teams further. It has added blocking on two independent layers and tightened DNS to an allowlist.
Broader reporting around the investigation also describes a separate case of a persistent internal model leaking a GitHub token (and ignoring researcher pushback), plus 53 cases of user images posted to third-party hosts from earlier periods — Enterprise/Business/API data unaffected unless an admin had enabled the path. OpenAI is notifying organizations and working on takedowns.
